Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Mariam Kvrivishvili, Together with Finance Minister Lasha Khutsishvili and Infrastructure Minister Revaz Sokhadze, Inspected Ongoing Works at Kutaisi David the Builder International Airport

Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Mariam Kvrivishvili, together with Minister of Finance, Lasha Khutsishvili, and Minister of Infrastructure, Revaz Sokhadze, examined the ongoing works at Kutaisi David the Builder International Airport and visited the projects that have already been completed.

Specifically, the ministers inspected the construction progress of the new 3,6-kilometer runway and airfield infrastructure, which is now in its final stage.

As Mariam Kvrivishvili noted this will be a historic project for Georgia’s aviation and transport sector as a whole.

“The length of the new runway will be 3,6 kilometers, making it the longest runway in our country. Consequently, we will have the capacity to accommodate cargo and passenger aircraft of all sizes at Kutaisi International Airport. This will significantly increase the airport’s throughput capacity, allow us to handle more flights, and, most importantly, help us to further develop cargo transportation at Kutaisi International Airport. Over the next three months or so, we will fully complete the ongoing construction works preceding full operational status. It is also worth noting that we are practically finalizing the installation of lighting equipment and other navigation systems,” – the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development said.

The Minister added that the new runway will open this autumn.

“As the ongoing infrastructure works are fully aligned with the project schedule, we expect to open the new runway and taxiways this autumn and put them into full operation to receive the first flight on the new infrastructure at Kutaisi International Airport in the autumn of this year,” – Mariam Kvrivishvili commented.

The ministers also visited completed projects within the airport area, including two new premium-service business lounges and a Fast Track System aimed at improving passenger comfort and service quality.

According to Mariam Kvrivishvili, the ongoing infrastructure projects are fully aligned with the master development plan that the government has elaborated for Kutaisi International Airport.

An aviation infrastructure project of this scale is being carried out for the first time in the history of independent Georgia, with a total value of 240 million GEL. Once the new infrastructure becomes operational, the airport will be able to handle and service the world’s largest aircraft. This will significantly boost the airport’s capabilities and strengthen Georgia’s position as a regional aviation and logistics hub. Mariam Kvrivishvili assessed that the project will hold immense value for the development of the country’s tourism and aviation sectors.

Information regarding the ongoing and completed projects at Kutaisi Airport was presented to the ministers by the Deputy Minister Tamar Ioseliani and the Director General of the United Airports of Georgia, Levan Moseshvili.
