Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Mariam Kvrivishvili met with Liu Wei, Minister of Transport of the People’s Republic of China.

During the meeting, the parties discussed the possibility of establishing a joint working group for effective coordination in the transport sector, which will bring together relevant authorities and agencies from the rail, maritime, automotive and civil aviation domains.

Special attention was given to the Anaklia Deep Sea Port as one of the key infrastructure projects along the Middle Corridor. It was noted that active construction work is currently underway in Anaklia. The discussion also highlighted that approximately 7 billion USD has been earmarked for priority infrastructure projects through 2032. Georgia aims to double the capacity of its maritime and rail networks and triple the total capacity of the country’s airport infrastructure. Particular emphasis was placed on the railway modernization project and the large-scale renewal of rolling stock.

The sides explored prospects for expanding direct air links between Georgia and China, including potential new direct routes connecting Tbilisi to Beijing and Tbilisi to Guangzhou. To facilitate the further development of direct flights, both sides agreed to continue active cooperation between the civil aviation authorities of Georgia and China.

Special attention was paid to the further development of the Middle Corridor, as well as increasing its efficiency and competitiveness. In this context, emphasis was placed on the joint initiative adopted in Beijing within the framework of the Global Sustainable Transport Forum on promoting the improvement of capacity, reliability, efficiency and competitiveness of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, which envisages strengthening cooperation among participating countries across various directions.

It was noted that the Georgian side welcomes China’s growing interest in the Middle Corridor, which is also reflected in the increase of China-related freight turnover passing through the corridor. In 2025, freight turnover to and from China via the Middle Corridor increased by 20%, with this strong momentum continuing into 2026.

Senior officials from the Railway and Civil Aviation Administrations of the People’s Republic of China, General Manager of COSCO SHIPPING Holdings Li Xi, as well as Deputy Ministers of Economy and Sustainable Development Tamar Ioseliani, Irakli Nadareishvili and Genadi Arveladze also attended the meeting.
