Mariam Kvrivishvili, the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, participated in the event dedicated to the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.

In her address, Mariam Kvrivishvili congratulated the Government of the People’s Republic of China and the Chinese people on their National Day, wishing them continuous peace, prosperity and development.

The Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development placed special emphasis on the strategic partnership between Georgia and the People’s Republic of China.

„Georgia and China have enjoyed friendly and constructive relations for over three decades. During this period, our bilateral relations have developed rapidly. In 2023, our relations were elevated to a strategic partnership, and this year we took another historic step when in June Georgia and China jointly declared the elevation of relations to a comprehensive strategic partnership. This joint decision reflects the scale of our cooperation and opens new opportunities for both countries,” – the Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development stated.

In her speech, Mariam Kvrivishvili emphasized that economic cooperation has become one of the driving forces of the partnership between the two countries. According to her, the Free Trade Agreement, which entered into force in 2018, laid a solid foundation for expanding trade and economic ties between the two nations.

“In the first eight months of 2026, the trade turnover between Georgia and China exceeded USD 2 billion. China is currently Georgia’s second-largest trading partner. Furthermore, we are actively working toward further strengthening our investment partnership. Chinese investments have become an important part of Georgia’s economic development. From 2002 to date, Chinese companies have invested more than USD 800 million in Georgia, contributing to the development of numerous sectors,” – the Minister noted.

According to Mariam Kvrivishvili, transport and logistics represent one of the main directions of economic cooperation between Georgia and China. She stated that this partnership is already yielding tangible results: in 2025, container shipments between the countries through the corridor reached a record high, increasing by 20% compared to the previous year.

In addition to trade and economic relations, the Minister also spoke about the importance of people-to-people ties. In this context, she highlighted the connectivity between the two countries.

“Since May 2024, citizens of Georgia and China have enjoyed visa-free travel, which has created new opportunities for tourism, business, education, and people-to-people relations. This year, connectivity was further strengthened with the launch of direct Shanghai-Tbilisi flights. We see significant potential for further deepening cooperation in all directions,” stated Mariam Kvrivishvili.

Mariam Kvrivishvili thanked the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Georgia for its invaluable contribution to strengthening the friendship and partnership between the two countries.

At the solemn reception, Tai Chunyong, Charge d’Affaires of the Embassy of China in Georgia, addressed the guests.

The national anthems of Georgia and the People’s Republic of China were performed at the event.

Members of the executive and legislative branches of the Georgian government, as well as representatives of the diplomatic corps, participated in the event dedicated to the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China.
