Google Street View officially launches its operations in Georgia. Irakli Nadareishvili, the Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, participated in the opening event of the project. According to Nadareishvili, the operation of Google Street View is highly important for the country from an economic perspective, especially in the field of tourism.
“This is a very important day for Georgia both in terms of digitalization and for increasing the country’s global visibility. Starting today, millions of people will have the opportunity to virtually view Georgia’s cities and landmarks with the high resolution and quality of filming that Google Street View offers to the world’s population. This is of immense importance from an economic standpoint and for tourism, as tourism is one of the top priorities for our country’s economic development,” – the Deputy Minister noted.
According to Irakli Nadareishvili, active work on this matter had been underway for several years. He also stated that Google Street View fosters the development of digital economy infrastructure and the strengthening of small and medium-sized businesses.
“Small and medium-sized entrepreneurs are being given a unique opportunity to showcase their businesses, offerings, and services even further. It is important to note that our cooperation with Google does not end here; we have concrete plans, including for the development of Google Street View, more areas will be covered, as well as pedestrian zones in our tourist cities. Furthermore, we are working on artificial intelligence and other technological fields, which, in turn, also represent priorities for the Government of Georgia and the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development,” – Irakli Nadareishvili stated.
The official launch of Google Street View in Georgia was made possible through the cooperation of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development and the LEPL Georgia’s Innovation and Technology Agency (GITA).
As part of this global project, the Google Street View team successfully captured approximately 13 000 kilometers of roads, highway networks and key tourist locations across Georgia, including Tbilisi, Batumi, Kutaisi, Rustavi, Akhaltsikhe, Mtskheta, Telavi, Zugdidi, Gori, Ozurgeti and Mestia. Through 360-degree panoramic imagery, the project showcases Georgia’s nature, cities and ancient cultural heritage on the world’s digital map.
