Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, Mariam Kvrivishvili and Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze visited the container and fertilizer terminals at the Batumi Sea Port. They inspected the existing infrastructure and observed ongoing operations at the port on-site.
Representatives of Batumi Sea Port and its terminals provided government members with a detailed overview of operational processes, current capabilities and future infrastructural development plans.
The meeting highlighted the key importance of Batumi Port’s infrastructure and terminals in strengthening the country’s transport and logistics capabilities. It was noted that the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development, together with the Maritime Transport Agency, assessed the capacity, technical infrastructure and overall potential of the country’s maritime sector. As a result of cooperation with the private sector, the total tonnage and cargo capacity of vessels handled at the country’s ports have increased.
Specifically, according to data from the first six months of 2026, Batumi Port maintains positive dynamics. Total cargo turnover reached 2,5 million tons, representing a 4% increase compared to the same period last year. Regarding container volume, Batumi Port handled 70839 TEU, which is a 14%-increase compared to the same period last year.
During the visit, special attention was drawn to direct ferry transport services between Batumi Sea Port, Bulgaria and Romania, which was increased by 54% compared to last year. Currently, 4 vessels operate regularly on these routes.
Alongside the Minister of Economy and the Head of Government, the visit to Batumi Sea Port was attended by Zurab Pataradze, Chairman of the Government of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara, Tamar Ioseliani, Deputy Minister of Economy, and Ivane Abashidze, Head of the Maritime Transport Agency.
