Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development Mariam Kvrivishvili, together with Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, inspected the renovated educational and training infrastructure at the Batumi State Maritime Academy and reviewed planned projects on-site.
The total student enrollment capacity at the Batumi State Maritime Academy for the 2026–2027 academic year has increased to 900. Consequently, the Academy’s administration renovated and expanded its educational infrastructure to enable more students to receive a full-fledged education.
As a result, the Academy’s training simulators, including navigation bridge, cargo handling and stability, and engine room simulators, were upgraded in phases, allowing students to undergo practical training in line with modern international standards. Additionally, new facilities for fire safety and sea survival were set up. It was noted that since 2012, the state has invested almost 40 million GEL in upgrading the educational infrastructure and programs at the Batumi Maritime Academy.
Furthermore, when discussing future projects, it was highlighted that a full rehabilitation of the Batumi Maritime Academy’s buildings and facilities is planned, updating the infrastructure in accordance with modern standards. The works will be carried out by the Municipal Development Fund of the Ministry of Infrastructure.
Batumi State Maritime Academy is Georgia’s leading higher education institution in the maritime field, training highly qualified seafarers and maritime industry specialists. Georgia currently has over 21000 certified seafarers, which is double the figure from 10 years ago.
The government’s policy aims to further develop the country’s maritime sector, which involves accepting more students into institutions like the Maritime Academy and increasing employment in the sector. It was noted that the maritime sector currently contributes approximately 1 billion GEL annually to Georgia’s economy, which is a figure that continues to grow year by year.
The visit to the Academy was also attended by Zurab Pataradze, Chairman of the Government of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara, Tamar Ioseliani, Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development, and Ivane Abashidze, Director of the Maritime Transport Agency.
